Dennis grew up in Rochester, NY and attended college at the Eastman School of
Music. Following graduation (with a draft number of 13) he spent four years in
Air Force Bands, two in Biloxi, MS and two in Tokyo, Japan. Dennis earned the
Master of Music Education degree and Ph.D. from North Texas State University. He then spent eight years teaching in
Indiana (plus another year in Japan) and arrived at Huntingdon College in
1988. Since that time, he has been principal trumpet of the Montgomery
Symphony Orchestra and Professor of Music at Huntingdon College.
Carly Johnson
Dr. Johnson is Professor of Upper Brasswinds at Alabama State University where she teaches courses in applied trumpet; brass methods; brass ensemble, conducting studies; and serves as Director of the ASU Wind Ensemble. Dr. Johnson earned the Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University, the Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance from the University of Florida, and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Trumpet Performance from The Ohio State University. A versatile and active musician, Dr. Johnson has performed with the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra, Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, Alabama Shakespeare Festival Orchestra, Youngstown (Ohio) Symphony Orchestra, Ashland (Ohio) Symphony Orchestra, Springfield (Ohio) Symphony Orchestra, Columbus (Ohio) Symphony Orchestra, Columbus (Ohio) ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, Columbus (Ohio) Bach Ensemble, and the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra.
Doug Bristol - Trombone
Trombonist and composer Doug Bristol is Professor of
Theory and Technology at Alabama State University. His educational background
includes degrees from the University of Tennessee, Georgia State University,
and the Doctor of Arts degree in Theory and Composition from the University of
Northern Colorado. His diverse performances have included classical works,
such as Stravinsky’s
Octet and the microtonal music of Monroe Golden, to performances with commercial
recording artists The O’Jays, Temptations, and Ray Charles. Orchestral
experience includes work with the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra, Mobile Opera
Orchestra, and the Music South Symphony Orchestra.
Bill holds the Bachelor of Music Education
degree from Indiana University, a Master of Music in horn performance
(Illinois State) and a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree (UNC-Greensboro). His
orchestral credits include the Peoria Symphony (IL), the National Opera
Company, and resident orchestras for such festivals as the 1989 Bodensee
Festival in Friedrichshafen, West Germany, and the Roque Cordero Festival
Orchestra in Normal,
Illinois. Dr. Schaffer performs recitals regularly and has been featured as a
soloist at several chamber music festivals. Originally from the Washington
D.C. area, Dr. Schaffer teaches at Auburn University and performs regularly
with the La Grange (GA) Symphony.
Mike Mason - Tuba
Mike received his musical training at the University of Alabama with James Jenkins, principal tubist of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra (Florida). Mike is the first call freelance tubist in central Alabama and has performed with the Alabama and Tuscaloosa Symphonies. He is currently the principal tubist of the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra in Pensacola, Florida. Mike is also a member of Doug Back and the Dixie Strummers, a unique trio of banjo, guitar, and tuba, performing music of the 'teens,'20s, and'30s.
